While the US celebrated Independence Day, indie retailers around the UK celebrated Independents’ Day on 4 July, 2018.

Supported by the British Independent Retail Association (bira), Independents’ Day UK is a not-for-profit campaign that helps and promotes indie businesses based in the UK all year round, with its focus on July 4.

At a time when the UK high street is under increasing pressure, national initiatives like Independent’s Day help to inject positivity into retail, and encourage consumers to visit their local independent shops. Independent retailers account for around 65% of the approximately 290,000 retail outlets in the UK and stand at the heart of local communities in the UK.

The day’s activities included special events and discounts for shoppers, while retailers who joined bira on 4 July benefited from 20% off the membership. Retailers claimed their discount by entering UKINDIEDAY as the coupon code on the bira website.

On 4 July indie shops around the country entered into the spirit of the campaign both in store and online, tagging @ukindieday on Twitter using the hashtags #ukindieday and #shoplocal.
