Kate Swann, a former WHSmith CEO, has been announced as chairwoman of online greetings card retailer Moonpig. Swann joins the company as its sales hit £100m after a decade of double-digit growth.

Sky News first reported the appointment, adding that she had turned WHSmith around during her tenure, based on an expansion of the travel arm of its business, a sector that’s still out-performing other aspects of its business.

Since her WHSmith post, Swann has been CEO of SSP, a transport food specialist. When Swann’s departure from SSP was announced in November 2018, shares in the company tumbled.

Before accepting the Moonpig post, DIY retailer Kingfisher and the John Lewis Partnership had Swann in their sights for the potential roles of CEO and chairwoman respectively.

Swann commented: “I am delighted to be joining Nickyl Raithatha, [Moonpig chief executive] and the Moonpig team and look forward to working with them to build on the many opportunities the business has.”

The appointment comes after the announcement last month that Moonpig is to make 42 staff redundant as part of an overhaul of its business structure. Moonpig (and its Dutch-based Greetz business) split from Photobox, making both businesses autonomous.
