Zebra pen receives Japanese design makeover

Tokyo-based studio Nendo has created the bLen ballpoint pen for Japanese manufacturer Zebra.

Nendo has updated the standard ballpoint design to be more ergonomic and to reduce rattling when writing. The aim was to make the pen easy to hold for long periods of writing, with a brass weight in the tip of the pen to lower the centre of gravity.

The Nendo design studio commented: “This weight allows for a smooth and gentle touch on the paper, while significantly reducing unexpected movements of pen due to the centripetal force created while writing.”

A fixing element between the cartridge and body of the pen ensures enhanced stability. An extra spring in the retractable button push improves suspension and reduces rattling.

The designers were inspired by professional drawing tools which have a wider button push than regular pens, which allow enough space to include the pen’s specifications, such as ink colour and line thickness.

The bLen is available in three colours: red, black and blue, in either 0.5mm or 0.7mm pen-tip widths.
